Pankhurst is a direct response to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which kickstarted the 'Kill The Bill' protests during 2021 and 2022.
The bill, which is currently in the final stages of its approval before Royal Assent, would give police new powers to restrict or even ban demonstrations – including setting “maximum noise levels” on protests. This typeface takes inspiration from the crafted placards used by Emmeline Pankhurst & the Suffragette movement, who understood the vitalness of disruptive protests, and features a censored strip across the uppercase characters in reference to the muzzle that the proposed bill would enforce upon essential activism.
